Parents For Choice welcome the call by the members of the Citizens’ Assembly for safe and legal access to abortion in Ireland for those who need it

Parents for Choice extend their gratitude to the members of the Citizens’ Assembly for the time and attention given over the last number of months to the challenges posed by the 8th amendment, and the steps needed to address these challenges. Parents for Choice welcome the call by members of the Assembly for safe and legal access to abortion in Ireland, and we urge the government to take immediate action to reflect this.

Commenting, spokesperson Sinéad Redmond said, “Parents for Choice were privileged to have been invited to address the Assembly. We are very happy that they heard our message. The Assembly have called for an amendment to the constitution to ensure the Oireachtas legislates for abortion access. The Assembly then clarified what level of access to abortion people in Ireland should have: full access up to 12 weeks, and access up to 22 weeks on the grounds of a risk to health and for socio-economic reasons. This call for change cannot be ignored. The government must act on these recommendations without delay.”

“We are also heartened to see the Assembly call for access to abortion at any stage of gestation where there is a risk to our life, a serious risk to our health, or where the pregnancy is not viable.”

Parents for Choice campaign for access to a full range of reproductive choices, and bodily autonomy for people who are pregnant, whether they wish to continue the pregnancy or not. This includes repeal of the Eighth Amendment, reform of the HSE National Consent Policy and access to free, safe and legal abortion.
